Drop-off birthday party etiquette for hosts and parents
Drop-off parties are a gift to busy parents and a big step for kids. A few clear words on the invite and a smooth handoff at the door make them work.
When do drop-off parties start?
There's no official age, but many families start dropping off around five to seven, once kids can use the bathroom on their own, speak up when they need something and handle a couple of hours without a parent. Under that, parents usually stay. For toddlers, the party is really for the family.
Every child is different. A parent who wants to stay the first time, or whose child has a serious allergy or medical need, should always be welcome.
Saying it on the invite
Be explicit, because "parents welcome" and "drop-off" are both common and nobody wants to guess.
- Drop-off: "Drop-off party, 2:00-4:00. Pickup at 4:00 sharp."
- Either is fine: "Drop off or stay and have a coffee, whatever works for you."
- Parents stay: "Grown-ups, please stay. There'll be snacks for you too."
Always include an end time, and ask for a pickup phone number with the RSVP.
For the host
- Collect a phone number for every child and keep the list by the door.
- Ask about allergies, medical needs and anything that helps ("gets nervous with loud music").
- Have enough grown-ups: one for activities, one for food and the door, more for little ones. See our helper's rule of thumb
- Check kids in and out by name, and only hand a child to the adult the parent named.
- Plan a calm last activity so pickup isn't a scramble.
- If a child is upset or hurt, call the parent. That's what the number is for.
For parents dropping off
- RSVP by the date, with your phone number and anything the host should know.
- Walk your child to the door and say hello to the host. Don't drop at the curb.
- Tell the host if someone else is picking up.
- Arrive on time for pickup. Ten minutes late is two more kids for the host to manage.
- Keep your phone on and nearby during the party.
Pickup manners
Thank the host, collect your child's things and the favor, and head out. A quick text later ("thanks, they had the best time") is lovely. If siblings come along at pickup, keep them at the door unless the host invites them in.
Frequently asked questions
What age is a drop-off birthday party?
Many families start around five to seven, but it depends on the child. Say clearly on the invite whether it's drop-off, and welcome any parent who'd rather stay.
Is it rude to stay at a drop-off party?
Not if you ask. Hosts are usually glad to have another adult, especially if your child is young or has an allergy.
Should siblings come to a drop-off party?
Only if the invitation includes them. If you need to bring a sibling, ask the host first.
