How many kids should I invite to a birthday party?

Start with the classic "age + 1" guideline, then factor in the class, the space and the grown-ups. Here's a quick way to land on a number.

For a 7-year-old: about 8 guests

A common guideline is the child's age plus one: about 8 guests for a 7-year-old. It keeps the group manageable and the birthday kid able to actually play with everyone. A comfortable range is 6-12.

From school Inviting 8 from a class of 22 is completely fine. Send invites directly to those families (by text or email) rather than handing them out at school, and check whether your school has a birthday policy. Inviting the whole class

Grown-ups to have on hand

For 8 kids this age we'd want about 3 adults (you included): one to run activities, one for food and the door, more for little ones or water. That's our comfort rule of thumb, not an official ratio; venues and pools may set their own.

The "age + 1" guideline

It's one of the best-known pieces of party advice: invite as many kids as your child's age, plus one. A 5-year-old gets about six friends; an 8-year-old about nine. It's not a rule, but it keeps the group small enough for the birthday kid to actually enjoy everyone, and for one or two adults to keep things fun.

The class question

If the guideline lands you at more than about half the class, many parents invite everyone. Fewer than that, invite privately and keep the party off the school radar. Read the whole-class guide.

How many adults?

There's no official ratio for a home party, so we use a comfort rule: more grown-ups the younger the kids, plus one extra for food and the door. Pools, venues and sleepovers may need more. Ask helpers early.

Frequently asked questions

What is the age plus one rule for birthday parties?

A common guideline: invite as many guests as your child's age, plus one. It keeps parties manageable, especially for younger kids. It's a starting point, not a rule.

Do I have to invite the whole class?

No. Either invite everyone or keep it small and invite privately, so nobody is visibly left out.

How many adults do I need at a kids' party?

More the younger the kids: for toddlers, roughly one adult per two or three; for school-age kids, one per six to eight is comfortable, plus one for food and the door. That's our rule of thumb, not an official ratio.
