Butterfly birthday party ideas & invitations

Paper wings, flower crowns and a sky full of paper butterflies: a butterfly garden party is gentle, colorful and happiest outdoors.

A butterfly party is really a garden party with wings. If you have a yard, a patio or a park nearby, use it. Little ones arrive, choose a pair of wings to decorate, and flutter between the flower-crown table and the snacks.

Skip live butterfly releases. They're stressful for the insects and often disappointing on the day. A paper butterfly release, where everyone throws handfuls of tissue butterflies or blows them off a fan, gives you the same big moment and the photo. Everyone can be a butterfly, any color they like.

Why kids love a butterfly party

  • Wings to decorate keep arrivals busy and go home as the favor
  • A paper butterfly release is a big moment with no live animals
  • Flowers, fruit and soft colors make the table look lovely with little effort
  • Calm and gentle enough for twos, with enough making for eights and nines
  • Works in a backyard, a park pavilion or a sunny living room
Best for ages
2-9
Good for
Twos to fours love wearing wings and fluttering to music; sixes to nines love designing wings, weaving flower crowns and the paper butterfly release.

Paper butterfly release

Hand out cups of tissue-paper butterflies and count down together. Everyone throws them into the air at once for the big photo.

Flutter freeze

Flap your wings while the music plays and land on a flower (a paper plate on the grass) when it stops.

Caterpillar to butterfly

Kids curl up in a cocoon (a blanket), wiggle out slowly, and fly around the yard. Little ones ask to do it again and again.

Frequently asked questions

Should we do a live butterfly release at a birthday party?

We'd skip it. Shipped butterflies often don't fly well, and it's hard on them. A paper butterfly release, with everyone throwing tissue butterflies at once, gives you the same moment and a lovely photo, and you can keep a few to frame.

What do you do at a butterfly party for a 2 or 3 year old?

Keep it short and simple: wings on at the door, flutter to music, a snack of fruit and sandwiches, cupcakes and the paper butterfly release. About 90 minutes is plenty; our guide to party length has more by age.

How do you make easy butterfly wings for kids?

Cut wings from poster board or felt, punch two holes near the middle and thread elastic loops through for arms. Kids decorate them with markers and stickers. Make them the night before so they're ready at the door.
